Pregnancy Journaling
by Tamara Hanson

Your bundle of joy sits in your belly--he or she may only be the size of a piece of rice, but she's all yours and you want to make this moment in history stand out.

You decide that a pregnancy journal is the key to sharing this time with your child. You even make it extra special by purchasing a beautiful journal and special pen.

Once you get your journal home, you crack it open and write down the date. You then write down the details of the doctor's appointment, the expected due date, and....well, what else is there? A moment by moment account of your morning sickness?

You pregnancy journal isn't just something to write down heart rates and blood pressures. It's also a place to share your hopes, fears, and feelings about your pregnancy, about the baby and what else is happening at that point in time.

This is your moment to speak to your child--one on one--before he or she is born. This is a moment you will never have again. Send your message to your unborn child by putting it in your book.

Some things to remember to add to your journal:

1) Pictures of your growing belly.

2) Pictures of others during this time. Both my pregnancy journals include pictures of special people in my life who passed on during my pregnancy. People my child couldn't meet. My grandmother passed away while I was pregnant with my son. My husband's father passed away while I was pregnant with my daughter. I was able to talk about both these people and what they meant to me and the type of person they were.

3) Mention what other things are happening in your life or in the world during your pregnancy. I wrote about my mother's win against cancer during my second pregnancy. I wanted my children to know all that was going on so they could understand that we all face adversity.

4) Mention how much they mean to you. Tell them you think the world of them and that they will accomplish great things.

5) Mention what you have learned through life, instilling in them tidbits of your own life lessons. Of course, put a positive spin on things. You want them to feel like they can handle life.

6) One thing I always make sure I mention is that the decisions that dad and I make regarding the children were done out of love and that we were going through our own learning process.

So, a journal isn't just about growth rate and what the doctor said. It's a letter to your little one marking a point in their life before they make an appearance into this world.
